I am an early adopter and will usually pay the higher prices to have features that I see worthwhile and innovative. Wifi is one of those technologies. I own a HTC Blue angel device, which is a convergence devices and one of the only devices running Windows mobile with Wifi and phone features. HTC is a smartphone maker that makes a variety of Windows Mobile devices for several carriers around the world, and their products are often rebranded and sold under some of the major brands.

The phone is a joy, except for one small thing that is a deal breaker to most people. It is not by any means intuitive or user friendly. I am a engineering student so things may be annoying to me, but they are downright hard to use for other people. The other quib I have with the phone is battery life and thickness. Thickness is understandable given the size of the battery and the features it has (Slide out keyboard), but it is by no means ideal and is quick bulky to put into a pocket. Battery life with bluetooth and wifi is also paltry. It barely lasts a day which is quite the hassle if you forget to charge it at night. The touch screen is nice, but many features require you to use the stylus in order to access. Many of the functions also require many clicks and menus, which is not good when you are in a rush or trying to attend to another task.

Up to now, I have been fairly unimpressed by RIM’s offerings ( RIMM ), especially for the needs of a student/young adult. They have been large, and really lack many of the features I require. The browsing is subpar in my opinion compared to Opera on Windows Mobile. I understand email is the claim to fame but it really needs to play music, high quality pictures and browse the internet like it was meant to be used.

Meet the Pearl, Rim’s answer to the commercial market. I have gotten a chance to play around with one through a Rim employee and the first thing that catches you is the white pearl in the middle. Gone is the click wheel on the side, and to replace it is this slick little trackball that also functions as a button. Let me tell you brickbreaker is so much better and 2D menus are awesome. The device is the sexiest thing to come out of Rim in…well a long time. It is thin, sleek, has a camera and features the impressive battery life Rim products are known for. It is actually something that might make great strides against the RAZR and other commercial phones. I like…Way to go Rim.

By the way, the reason I don’t like internet on the blackberry is the ridiculous cost of bandwidth. It is just not worth it for me to pay that much. I can see why corporations might pay it so they can have instant email contact with everyone, but as a student surrounded by free wifi networks… well that is the solution for me. Wifi.

Thiago Avila

I am a fairly high tech consumer.
